Cushing Library Hawk Squawk for Wednesday, 2-3-10

by
See's Lollypops

Mmmm, four flavors!

AND THE WINNER IS: Congrats to Rocio Briseno, the lucky winner of a big box of See’s lollipops. Rocio’s name was selected in a drawing from all students who completed the Library FYE assessment last December.

REMINDER: Wine, cheese, and laughter as Dan Schmidt reads from Houndini, his essay collection, 7 p.m. Thursday, February 11 at the Cushing Library in an event co-sponsored with the campus bookstore.

If you plan to buy a copy of his book (and of course you do..!) please buy a copy from the bookstore as soon as possible so that they will know if they need to order more copies before the reading.

SHORT-SHORT LIBRARY VIDEOS: See the library’s series of short (under-5-minute) videos for quick refreshers on how to log in to the library portal, use the catalog, find eBooks, or hunt down peer-reviewed journal articles. Flash required.

FEATURED RESOURCE: ebrary. This outstanding eBook collection just got even better with the addition of nearly 2,000 new titles, including dozens in Psychology, two dozen in Nursing, over a dozen new titles on poverty, plus new titles on theology, music, environmentalism, church work, and much more. That brings our ebrary collection to almost 50,000 titles.

All of our eBooks can be searched and retrieved through the library information portal (if you’re off-campus, be sure to log in first — see our guide or video if you have questions), but if you go directly to our ebrary collection and register as a user, you can create “bookshelves,” search inside books, and even mark and annotate books.

Note: we at the library are watching the iPad with interest, and hope our eBook vendors are doing the same.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT: THE RETURN OF FILE MANAGEMENT FOR THE MAC

You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! You’ll learn how to rename documents!

On Monday, February 18, 12:30-2 in the Technology Support Center (Brennan 80), Dane Riley from Apple is returning to reprise his file management workshop. The February 1 workshop was very helpful for all of us Macbook neophytes, and Dane threw in a few extra minutes on the  iPad. It was an excellent investment of our time. To sign up, email  Nicole Greenland at greenland@hnu.edu.
